A mala is a string of prayer beads that allows you to keep count of your mantras during meditation. A full-size mala has 108 beads—one for each energetic center in your body. It is believed that saying the mantra (or prayer) 108 times hits every center, amplifying the energy given to your prayer. You can move around your bracelet, touching each bead as you do, four times to reach 108. If you need an idea for a mantra to repeat, “Shanti” means “peace” in Sanskrit.
